Queen Elizabeth II unveils a historic new portrait of her with the three male heirs. Many around the world wonder when the time comes if Prince Charles would abdicate, allowing his younger son, Prince William to take over and represent the Royal Family.

For Americans ’ the British royal family has always amazed us with their traditions as they have been the backbone of the British Empire, holding up centuries of practices and pride for the British people. The Queen was forced to step up and serve her country when her father suddenly passed and has been the face of her nation. She married her beloved husband, Prince Phillip in 1947 who was a Greek prince and together had four children, three sons, and a daughter. She has reigned with her husband by her side for the past 67 years. After the Queen’s passing, Prince Charles will become King of England, then after that will be Prince William, and the third heir to the throne is Prince George.

The 93-year-old monarch decided to ring in 2020 in her own special way; by having a portrait painted of her and her three male heirs standing beside her. The picture was taken right before the Queen’s annual Christmas luncheon at Buckingham Palace back on December 18th, according to People. Prince George, Prince William, and Prince Charles all were included in the historic portrait which was released on January 3rd, that was released by the palace to ring in the New Year. The Queen decided to host her extended family for the pre-Christmas party which was also used to capture joyous moments of the four royals as they tried to prepare their Christmas pudding. The Royal Family’s official Instagram showed off the portrait in a post, which can be seen below:

For Buckingham Palace, the portrait represented only the second time that a picture was published of the Queen and her three heirs to the crown. The very first picture was published back in 2016 for the Queen’s jubilee as she turned 90 and showed her grandson, Prince George standing on books. The most recent photograph was taken in the Throne Room of the palace by Ranald Mackechnie who also was responsible for the 2016 photo. The youngest model, Prince George wore tartan pants while his grandmother smiled at him wearing a light blue dress and her signature handbag.

Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, spent their holidays at Sandringham House in Norfolk where the family usually spends their holidays. The whole family was there including Prince George’s sister, Princess Charlotte. Noticeably missing from the festivities was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they decided to spend the holidays alone in Canada. It’s amazing to see how much history is shown in the new portrait - the Queen of England and the three future Kings of England.
