What’s interesting is that one of the easiest ways to protect your home is often overlooked, or viewed as non-essential. We’re talking about getting 24/7 monitoring with a home security system. It’s one of the most effective ways to protect your family and valuables inside your home, and it can even lower the cost of your home insurance premiums! You’ve heard us talk about security systems from our sponsor SimpliSafe before. We like SimpliSafe over all the others because it offers easy installation, amazing protection, and you don’t have to sign a long-term agreement. With SimpliSafe, you can have 24/7 monitoring for your home for as little as $15 per month. Note: Don’t miss out! As a listener of Kim Komando, you can save even more when you order. These powerful cameras record in HD video, are always on the lookout, and use motion sensors to alert you of any intruders. However, one of the top questions we receive is, “Where should I put them?” So that’s what we’ll aim to answer today.
Think beyond doors and windows
The most obvious places to install a SimpliCam are near your main entrance and back entrance. And, while we would recommend covering these areas, it’s also a good idea to think outside the box.
A bird’s eye view
Ideally, what you want to look for is a spot that provides coverage for as many areas as possible. In my home, for example, there’s a corner in my family room where a camera can view the back door in the kitchen, the garage door entrance and even the main entrance.
There is also a view of the hallway that leads down to the bedrooms, so essentially, anyone who tried to enter my home through one of the main doors or windows would be captured on camera.
Larger homes
In my particular case, this one camera would likely be enough to monitor my home sufficiently. However, many people live in larger residences where additional cameras may be needed. According to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI), a whopping 81 percent of burglars enter the target’s home through a first-floor door or window. That means this should be the first area you consider when choosing where to place your SimpliCams. At the bare minimum, it’s a good idea to cover each main entrance to your home. This includes the front door, back door, garage door, and any other exterior door on the first floor. A view of your first-floor windows is also a must.
Covering key areas
If covering every door isn’t feasible for your budget, decide which areas in your home might be the biggest targets for burglars, and place cameras there. The family room – where you keep a lot of expensive gadgets like TVs and stereo systems – is a good example. Or, you could even place a special camera to watch over the family safe where you keep all of your valuables and important records. Our Komando Shop has a variety of special-use cameras for your surveillance needs, too. Click here to view our selection of Video Surveillance Equipment on the Komando Shop. For example, for secluded rooms that don’t get too much activity but you still definitely want to keep an eye on, you can install a camera equipped with a motion sensor for time-lapse recordings.
Height matters
Wherever you decide to install your SimpliCams, there’s one important tip you need to keep in mind. If the camera is easily accessible, the burglar could crush it, or even add it to his loot. To avoid this, make sure you’re installing your security cameras high enough that they can’t be reached without a ladder. This will also provide a better view to cover the largest area possible.
Quick and easy installation:
Protecting your home should be a top of the priority. Order your SimpliSafe home security system today, and get a no-contract system that installs in 15 minutes without drilling. The sensors are linked wirelessly so you can put them anywhere and don’t have to run cables. That makes SimpliSafe perfect for apartments and rentals, along with sheds and garages. Because you can add additional sensors later, it can scale from small areas to larger homes with no problem. SimpliSafe uses cellular to signal the monitoring service for help, so there are no phone lines for burglars to cut. Police will arrive no matter what. Plus it has a loud 85dB siren in the base station, with the option for a second 105dB siren, which will drive off most burglars. Beyond SimpliCams, SimpliSafe offers door and window sensors and pet-friendly motion sensors for security. It also has sensors for freezing temperatures, floods, carbon monoxide and smoke, so you can protect your home against more than intruders. You also get a panic button so you can trigger the button yourself if needed. SimpliSafe is the easy, no-contract way to protect your family and your home.
